Wow.. So much has happened in the last couple of months. We were in Costa Rica working with Ocean’s Edge and now my team is in the Dominican Republic partnering with Makarios! Soon I will be sharing more with you, but for now I want to talk about the rest of our time in Guatemala and how you can pray for 2 communities that have a special place in my heart: Quejá and Jumuc.
In November 2020, Hurricane Eta impacted Guatemala, destroying many communities due to flooding or landslides. According to the government, at least 150 people died, including more than 100 who disappeared when hundreds of houses were buried in a landslide that swept through the community of Quejá. The same happened in the community of Jumuc, a landslide covered and destroyed the houses of at least 5 families. Our team had the privilege of going to these communities to show God’s love and carry the message of hope and a future that we can find in Jesus.
QUEJÁ
Our team was able to visit this small community in the middle of the mountains in Guatemala several times. We were able to bless more than 160 families with bags of food and cleaning supplies. While part of the team delivered the food bags, the rest of us took care of the children. We had been told there would be like 60 kids and we ended up having over 200! We had a time of worship (in English and Spanish haha) and then we talked about the story of Daniel and the lions and the importance of honoring God before men.
The second time we visited the community we shared the story of the prodigal son. We talked about God’s unconditional love and how it is never too late to return to Him. This time we were prepared for 200 kids and we had more than 500! And even the parents joined us during this time. We had the opportunity to pray for them and their specific needs as we finished with the kids. God for sure did a miracle and multiplied the snacks and coloring supplies we had for the kids!
Then Katie (our host) had a dream where a boy from this community told her “please come soon! We need help!” This moved her heart and the Lord made a way for us to go again. We went, parked our truck on the hillside and worshiped the Lord in the midst of this devastated community. Our team also was able to preach and share what God has been speaking to our hearts. I shared about 1 Peter 1 and the living hope we have in Jesus, only in Him we have an inheritance that can never perish. In this we can rejoice! Despite the fact that we now suffer many trials and have lost all our earthly possessions, we know that it is temporary and that our hope in Jesus is full of treasures in heaven.
On our last visit to Quejá we shared the story of David and Goliath. This time a team of Gap year boys who were also serving in Guatemala joined us. We talk about how God can use us even when the world sees us as small and defenseless, and that there is no big giant or impossible thing for God. Then we had dinner in the community and had an outdoor movie theater. We watched The Prince of Egypt: The Story of Moses. The whole community came! A woman thanked us very much because for months the only thing they have experienced, especially the children, has been sadness. And in those last days through these activities God brought joy and hope to have a life again!
All of the survivors of Quejá are currently living as refugees in temporary housing in the neighboring community called Chepenán. They are waiting for the government to assign them land to rebuild their lives. Please join me to continue praying that God will make a way for them. Lord we ask you to comfort the hearts of all of those who lost their loved ones. We thank you because you are a good Father, you love and care for these orphaned children. Provide for all their needs and may they truly have the living hope that’s found only in your son Jesus.
JUMUC
This small remote community was also affected by Hurricane Eta. Our team had the privilege of visiting Jumuc and sleeping there for several days. We were working with a team of guys from Gap Year and the Birdhouse Foundation, an organization that builds homes in high-risk areas in Guatemala.
During the day we joined the team in the construction of one of the 5 houses they have planned in this project. We did a bit of everything: from carrying the wood for the house up the mountain, to helping to assemble it and finish the electrical installations. Many children came to help! This reminded me of my times working with Tracing Public Spaces. I love empowering kids and teaching them how to use construction tools! It was a lot of physical work but at the same time a blessing to be a part of this new beginning for the Chomo family.
In the afternoons we would go out to the community to look for children to do activities with them. It was beautiful to be able to bring joy and fun along with a message of hope! Time and time again we could see how God multiplied our resources, increasing our faith encouraging us to be more like children: they do not need much to be happy and despite their current circumstances, they do not worry much about tomorrow.
We finished the house in record time and were able to be there for the inauguration. We prayed for the family and handed over the keys, it was very special! Please join me in praying for Santos, his wife Estela, and their newborn baby Dulce: that through this new home they may experience God’s love and provision. Lord use this family, may they be a living testimony to their community of how you are a good Father who protects and provides for his children. We pray that many more can meet you through them at Jumuc.
Being able to use my architecture degree in missions is my dream, but many times I wonder if such a hard career was worth studying and how God is going to use it. A lot of times He surprises me! In 2020 I spent my birthday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I spent the whole day walking through this city full of skyscrapers and incredible buildings. It reminded me of my passion for design, architecture and the 10/40 window.
The fact that this year we were building a house on my birthday was a very beautiful gift to me and a reminder that every part of my story, everything that I have lived, God will use for my good and His glory. He is a good father who loves me and spoils me. I may never work in an architecture office again, but in the last 3 years I have seen how when I let go of my career, God gave me so much more than I could dream or imagine! He knows the desires of my heart and I am confident that He will continue to provide me with more opportunities to serve Him with my gifts and talents as an architect.
God loves you! HE LOVES YOU!!! And His plans for you are good, with a hope and a future in Jesus. Whatever situation you find yourself in, He wants the best for you! He is a Father who hurts when He sees your heart aching, He also rejoices when He sees you smile! He provides, protects and loves you so much that He even wants to spoil you! He is waiting for you to ask Him to partner with you to fulfill the desires of your heart, that He put there in the first place! Invite Him in!!

Wow… Cuánto ha pasado en los últimos meses. Estuvimos en Costa Rica trabajando con Ocean’s Edge y ¡ahora estamos en la República Domincana apoyando al ministerio Makarios! Pronto les estaré compartiendo un poco más, pero por ahora quiero compartir con ustedes acerca del resto de nuestro tiempo en Guatemala y cómo pueden orar por 2 comunidades que tienen un lugar especial en mi corazón: Quejá y Jumuc.
En noviembre del 2020 el huracán Eta afectó a Guatemala destruyendo muchísimas comunidades por inundación o deslaves. Según cifras oficiales al menos 150 personas murieron, incluyendo más de 100 que desaparecieron cuando cientos de casas fueron enterradas en un deslave que arrasó con la comunidad de Quejá. Lo mismo pasó en la comunidad de Jumuc, un deslizamiento de tierra cubrió y destruyó las casas de al menos 5 familias. Nuestro equipo tuvo el privilegio de ir a estas comunidades para mostrar el amor de Dios y llevar el mensaje de esperanza que hay en Jesús.
QUEJÁ
Nuestro equipo pudo visitar esta comunidad varias veces. Pudimos bendecir a más de 160 familias con bolsas de comida y productos de limpieza. Mientras parte del equipo entregaba las bolsas, el resto nos encargamos de los niños. Nos habían dicho que serían como 60 niños y ¡terminamos teniendo más de 200! Tuvimos un tiempo de alabanzas (en inglés y español jaja) y luego hablamos acerca de la historia de Daniel y los leones y la importancia de honrar a Dios antes que a los hombres.
La segunda vez que visitamos a la comunidad compartimos la historia del hijo pródigo. Hablamos del amor incondicional de Dios y como nunca es tarde para regresar a Él. Esta vez fuimos preparados para 200 niños y ¡al final tuvimos más de 500! Y aún los adultos se unieron a este tiempo de enseñanza. Tuvimos la oportunidad de orar por ellos y sus necesidades específicas al terminar. ¡Dios hizo un milagro y multiplicó las meriendas y materiales que teníamos para los niños!
Luego Katie (nuestra host) tuvo un sueño donde un niño de esta comunidad le decía “¡por favor ven pronto! ¡Necesitamos ayuda!” Esto movió su corazón y el Señor abrió puertas para ir de nuevo. Fuimos y adoramos al Señor en medio de esta comunidad devastada. También pudimos predicar y compartir un poco de lo que Dios nos está enseñando. Yo compartí acerca de 1 Pedro 1 y la esperanza viva que tenemos en Jesús, solo en Él tenemos una herencia indestructible. ¡Esto es motivo de alegría! A pesar de que ahora sufrimos diversas pruebas y hayamos perdido todos nuestros bienes materiales, sabemos que es temporal y que nuestra esperanza en Jesús está llena de tesoros en el cielo.
En nuestra última visita a Quejá compartimos la historia de David y Goliath. Esta vez un equipo de muchachos de Gap year que también estaban sirviendo en Guatemala nos acompañaron. Hablamos de cómo Dios puede usarnos aún cuando el mundo nos ve como pequeños e indefensos, y que no hay gigante muy grande ni cosa imposible para Dios. Luego cenamos en la comunidad y tuvimos un cine al aire libre. Pasamos la película el Príncipe de Egipto: la historia de Moisés. ¡Toda la comunidad vino! Una mujer nos agradeció muchísimo porque desde hace meses lo único que han experimentado, sobre todo los niños, ha sido tristeza. ¡Y en esos últimos días Dios trajo alegría y la esperanza de tener una vida de nuevo con estas actividades!
Todos los sobrevivientes de Quejá actualmente están viviendo como refugiados en viviendas temporales en la comunidad vecina llamada Chepenán. Están esperando que el gobierno les asigne terrenos para rehacer sus vidas. Por favor acompáñame a seguir orando que Dios abra camino para ellos. Señor te pedimos traigas consuelo a todas las personas que perdieron sus familiares, te damos gracias porque eres un Padre bueno que ama a todos estos niños huérfanos. Provee para todas sus necesidades y que ellos realmente puedan conocer la esperanza viva que hay sólo en tu hijo Jesús.
JUMUC
Esta pequeña comunidad remota también fue muy afectada por el huracán Eta. Nuestro equipo tuvo el privilegio de visitar Jumuc y dormir ahí por varios días. Estuvimos trabajando con el equipo de muchachos de Gap Year y Birdhouse Foundation, una organización que construye viviendas en zonas de alto riesgo en Guatemala.
Durante el día estuvimos apoyando al equipo en la construcción de una de las viviendas. Hicimos un poco de todo: desde cargar la madera para la casa, hasta ayudar a armarla y a terminar las instalaciones eléctricas. Muchos niños se unieron al proceso y esto me recordó mis tiempos trabajando con Trazando Espacios. ¡Amo enseñar a niños a usar herramientas de construcción! Fue bastante trabajo físico pero al mismo tiempo una bendición ser parte de este nuevo comienzo para la familia Chomo.
En las tardes salíamos a la comunidad a buscar a niños para hacer actividades con ellos. ¡Fue bello poder traerles alegría y diversión junto a un mensaje de esperanza! Una y otra vez pudimos ver como Dios multiplicó nuestros recursos, aumentando nuestra fe animándonos a ser más como niños: no necesitan mucho para ser felices y a pesar de su circunstancia actual, no se preocupan mucho por el mañana.
Terminamos la casa en tiempo récord y pudimos estar ahí para la inauguración. Oramos por la familia y entregamos las llaves, ¡fue muy especial! Por favor acompáñame orando por Santos, su esposa Estela y su bebé Dulce: que por medio de este nuevo hogar ellos puedan experimentar el amor de Dios. Señor usa a esta familia, que puedan ser un testimonio vivo a su comunidad de como Tu eres un buen Padre que protege y provee para sus hijos. Oramos que muchos más puedan conocerte a través de ellos en Jumuc.
Poder usar mi carrera de arquitectura en misiones es mi sueño, pero muchas veces me cuestiono si valió la pena estudiar esa carrera tan demandante y me pregunto como Dios la va a usar. ¡A veces Él me sorprende! En 2020 pasé mi cumpleaños en Kuala Lumpur, Malasia. Pasé todo el día caminando en esa ciudad llena de rascacielos y edificios increíbles. Me recordó mi pasión por el diseño, la arquitectura y por la ventana 10/40.
El hecho de que este año estuviéramos construyendo una casa el día de mi cumpleaños fue un regalo muy bello para mí y un recordatorio de que cada parte de mi historia, todo lo que he vivido, Dios usará para mi bien y Su gloria. El es un buen Padre que me ama y consiente. Tal vez nunca trabaje en una oficina de arquitectura de nuevo, pero en los últimos 3 años he visto como al soltar mi carrera, ¡¡Dios me ha dado mucho más de lo que puedo soñar o imaginar!! El sabe los deseos de mi corazón y confío que me seguirá dando más oportunidades de servile con mis dones y talentos de arquitecto.
¡Dios te ama! Óyeme.. ¡¡¡ÉL TE AMA!!! Y sus planes para ti son buenos, con una esperanza y futuro en Jesús. Sea cual sea la situación en la que te encuentres, ¡Él quiere lo mejor para ti! Él es un Padre que le duele cuando ve tu corazón quebrado, ¡también se regocija cuando te ve sonreír! ¡Él provee, te protege y ama tanto que incluso quiere consentirte! ¡Él está esperando que lo invites a trabajar contigo para cumplir los deseos de su corazón, que Él puso allí en primer lugar! ¡Invítalo!
“¡Alabado sea Dios, Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo! Por su gran misericordia, nos ha hecho nacer de nuevo mediante la resurrección de Jesucristo, para que tengamos una esperanza viva y recibamos una herencia indestructible, incontaminada e inmarchitable. Tal herencia está reservada en el cielo para ustedes…” 1 Pedro 1:3-4
“Pues si ustedes, aun siendo malos, saben dar cosas buenas a sus hijos, ¡cuánto más su Padre que está en el cielo dará cosas buenas a los que le pidan!” Mateo 7:11
Servir a Dios es estar listo para ser sorprendido por Él.-
