Halo! Siapa namamu? Nama saya Raquel: Hello! What is your name? My name is Raquel / Terima kasih: thank you / Sama sama: you’re welcome / Nasi goreng ayam: fried rice with chicken / Kerja bagus: good job! / Satu dua tiga: one two three (when taking a picture, we always said this haha) These were some of the phrases I learned in Indonesian Bahasa that helped me start many conversations!

Terima kasih for reading my blog! This first month has been amazing. I was in Bandung, Indonesia; a beautiful city where the vast majority believes in Islam. I have never had close Muslim friendships, so this first month was very eye opening and it was a privilege for me to be able to learn a lot about this religion and Indonesian culture.

My team and I were serving at the YK Foundation that gives private lessons in English, Indonesian Bahasa and mathematics to preschool and elementary school children. They also focus on teaching values and character formation. Some of the staff are believers, others are Muslim. It was a gift for us to share daily with them! We were dedicated to assisting the teachers in their classes. On Mondays we taught values, Tuesday and Thursday we worked with elementary students, Wednesday and Friday preschool kids. I was specifically helping the 5th grade and Pre-K teacher (+40 children).

As you know, I was very excited to be able to work with children. I love working with them and I thought that would be my focus for this first month. We worked with 4 different groups of children every day, so after several days I started to get frustrated to see that I couldn’t even learn 5 of their names. I understood that, in addition to showing love to these +40 children and their parents, my ministry was really to cultivate relationships with the teachers and the school staff with whom we spent most of the day.

I began to focus then on this. Most of my conversations with the teachers (and people in general) were with my phone in my hand (THANK YOU LORD FOR GOOGLE TRANSLATE!!) At the beginning it was frustrating to rely on technology to speak; but it was amazing how, when there is no other option or wifi, we can show the love of Jesus much more with our actions than with words. With the huge language barrier, I had to look for different ways to connect with people. Simply being kind, showing interest, spending time, being intentional, smiling, hugging, greeting… All these little actions are little seeds that God has the power to use in a great way to touch hearts through his Holy Spirit. And I was a witness of this!

Mother Teresa said “Be kind and merciful. Don’t let anyone come to you and leave without inspiring them to be better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: that they see His kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in your warm greeting…” In this first month God showed me the impact of BEING LOVE, not just talking about it. I learned that a gesture can connect much more than words, that smiling can open doors to then ask questions and know hearts. I can say that in a very short time God gave me opportunities to cultivate relationships and that I now have friends in Indonesia. Now when I close my eyes to pray for Muslims they have a name, a face, a story beyond wikipedia. My heart breaks for them (thank you Lord for this!) and I really have a burden on my heart to reach this community with the love of God.

Sometimes we think that people need to know in theory who Jesus is, to have it in their heads; but many times it is necessary for people to see in a practical way what it means to live like Jesus, so that they can then invite Him to their heart! People do not need more words, they need tangible examples of love that they can see and feel. And God has called us to literally be His hands and feet. We just have to love people! And He will do the rest.

Halo! ¿Siapa namamu? Nama saya Raquel: ¡Hola! ¿Cómo te llamas? Mi nombre es Raquel / Terima kasih: gracias / Sama sama: de nada / Nasi goreng ayam: arroz frito con pollo / Kerja bagus: ¡buen trabajo! / Satu dua tiga: un dos tres (a la hora de tomar una foto, siempre decíamos esto jaja) Estas fueron algunas de las frases que aprendí en bahasa indonesio, ¡me ayudaron a iniciar muchas conversaciones! 

¡Terima kasih por leer mi blog! Este primer mes ha sido increíble. Estuve en Bandung, Indonesia; una bella ciudad donde la gran mayoría cree en el Islam. Nunca he tenido amistades cercanas musulmanas, por lo que este primer mes abrió mis ojos y fue un privilegio para mí poder compartir y conocer muchísimo acerca de esta religión y la cultura indonesia.

Mi equipo y yo estuvimos sirviendo en la Fundación YK que da clases particulares de inglés, bahasa indonesio y matemática a niños de preescolar y primaria. Además se enfocan en enseñar valores y formación de carácter. Parte del staff son creyentes, otros son musulmanes. ¡Fue un regalo para nosotras poder compartir diariamente con ellos! Estuvimos apoyando a las maestras en sus clases. Los lunes enseñábamos valores, martes y jueves primaria, miércoles y viernes preescolar. Yo estaba apoyando específicamente a la profesora de 5to grado y pre-kinder (+40 niños).

Como sabrán yo estaba muy emocionada de poder trabajar con niños. Me encanta trabajar con ellos y pensaba que ese sería mi enfoque por este primer mes. Trabajábamos con 4 grupos de niños distintos cada día, por lo que luego de varios días comencé a frustrarme al ver que no podía ni siquiera aprenderme 5 de sus nombres. Entendí que, además de demostrarle amor a estos +40 niños y sus representantes, mi ministerio era en verdad cultivar relaciones con las maestras y el staff de la escuela con quienes pasábamos casi todo el día.

Comencé a enfocarme entonces en esto segundo. La mayoría de mis conversaciones con las maestras (y la gente en general) eran con el teléfono en la mano (¡¡GRACIAS SEÑOR POR GOOGLE TRADUCTOR!!) Al comienzo fue frustrante depender de la tecnología para hablar, pero qué increíble como, cuando no hay otra opción ni wifi, podemos demostrar el amor de Jesús mucho más con nuestras acciones que con las palabras. Con la gigante barrera del idioma, tuve que buscar maneras distintas de conectar con la gente. Simplemente ser amable, mostrar interés, dedicar tiempo, ser intencional, sonreir, abrazar, saludar… Todas estas pequeñas acciones son semillitas que Dios tiene el poder de usar en gran manera para tocar corazones a través de su Espíritu Santo. ¡Y yo fui testigo de ésto!

La madre Teresa decía “Sé amable y misericordioso. No dejes que nadie venga a ti y luego se vayan sin inspirarlos a ser mejores y más felices. Sé la expresión viva de la bondad de Dios: que vean Su bondad en tu rostro, en tus ojos, en tu sonrisa, en tu saludo…” En este primer mes Dios me mostró el impacto de SER AMOR, no sólo hablar de él. Aprendí que un gesto puede conectar mucho mas que las palabras, que sonreir puede abrir puertas para luego hacer preguntas y conocer corazones. Puedo decir que en muy poco tiempo Dios me regaló oportunidades para cultivar relaciones y que ahora tengo amigas en Indonesia. Ahora cuando cierro los ojos para orar por los musulmanes tienen un nombre, una cara, una historia más allá de wikipedia. Mi corazón se quiebra por ellos (¡gracias Señor por esto!) y tengo realmente una carga en mi corazón por alcanzar esta comunidad con el amor de Dios.

A veces pensamos que la gente necesita saber en teoría quien es Jesús, tenerlo en la cabeza; pero muchas veces hace falta que la gente vea en la práctica lo que significa vivir como Jesús ¡para que puedan luego invitarlo  a su corazón! La gente no necesita más palabras, necesitan ejemplos tangibles de amor que puedan ver y sentir. Y Dios nos ha llamado a literalmente ser sus manos y pies. ¡Sólo debemos amar a la gente! Y el hace el resto.
