I want to tell you about our time in Guatemala and how you can join in prayer to what God is doing there. My team and I were working in Chicamán, a town in the mountains. This town is surrounded by communities where the majority of the population is Poqomchí, a mayan indigenous ethnic group. Some of these communities are considered as unreached (this will change!!! In the name of Jesus). Our hosts Wesly and Katie work with more than 20 indigenous pastors and their ministry focuses on equipping and training them so that they can then spread the word of God to their communities.
It was a blessing that our team spent the first 6 weeks of our trip in a town that is strategically located with so many indigenous communities around. It was quite a challenge but God gave us many opportunities to serve and show His love. Normally I translated for our team from english to spanish and then we had a wonderful translator named Rosa who translated from spanish to poqomchi. These communities have a mix between catholic religion and mayan rituals. Thank God they have access to the New Testament in their language (you can find it in the YouVersion app by searching POHNT in the languages). This made it easier to share with them the message of hope, truth and life they can find in Jesus!
These are some of the things we were able to do during our time in Chicamán and how you can join in prayer:
PASTORS CONFERENCE AND BIBLE STUDY
Our first days in Chicamán we were supporting in the logistics and all the details of a conference for the pastors and their wives. It was several days where they talked about the importance of having an intimate and personal relationship with God, and how this affects all the other areas of our life. The last night we were able to serve them by planning a romantic dinner. This was a very special time for them and they were so thankful, some had never had a special dinner as a couple! Our team was helping by serving the meals and taking care of the children.
This same group of pastors meets at least once a month in Chicamán to do a Bible study with the organization ASELSI. Please join me to continue praying for them. Some must travel more than 3 hours to get there. We pray Lord that you keep them safe and continue to make a way for them to be able to meet. Open their understanding and multiply the time they have together to grow and edify themselves. God, use them with great power to impact their communities and bring your Kingdom to the Poqomchí people. We pray for other communities in this region that do not yet know you as Lord and Savior such as La Lima, Pajuil, Pinal Paujil, Modelo Aguacate, Modelo Abajo y Belejú. This last one is one of the largest with more than 10.000 people and only 2 churches where the gospel is preached.
LA CAMPANA
We had the privilege of organizing a Beauty for Ashes event for 28 women from this community. These women are part of a ministry called Tapestry International that teaches them different job skills to help support their families. We were able to share a bit of our testimony with the women and then talk about Matthew 16 when Jesus asks: who do you say I am? And Peter responds: You are the Christ! The Son of the living God! We did an activity where they were able to express who Jesus is for them and then share with the group.
This beautiful community is in the mountains (the closest town is 2 hours away). We continue to pray for them. God please provide the resources they need to survive, especially water! Right now it is dry season and if it does not rain they must walk at least 3 hours to collect water from the river. Lord keep them healthy. We pray that they may have a new and deeper revelation of who you are Jesus and that the seeds planted in these women were sown in good soil and may bear fruit and produce a harvest that is 30, 60 and 100 fold. We trust that you are the one who gives the growth.
In my next blog I will share about how God gave us the opportunity to bless two communities affected by Hurricane Eta last November: Quejá and Jumuc.
PS: My team is already in Jacó, Costa Rica! We arrived well thank God. We will be working with Ocean’s Edge: a Christian organization that mobilizes volunteers to serve and impact the community in a positive way for the glory of God. You can see more of what they do on their website! Jacó is known as a surfing mecca but also as a sex tourism town where prostitution and human trafficking abounds. Please cover our team in prayer: may the Lord guard our minds and hearts and give us opportunities to be light in the midst of such heavy darkness.

Quiero contarles un poco acerca de nuestro tiempo en Guatemala y cómo pueden unirse en oración a lo que Dios está haciendo ahí. Mi equipo y yo estuvimos trabajando en Chicamán, un pueblo en las montañas. Este pueblo tiene alrededor comunidades donde la mayoría de la población es Poqomchí, una etnia indígena de origen maya. Algunas de estas comunidades se consideran como no alcanzadas (¡¡aún!! En el nombre de Jesús). Nuestros host Wesly y Katie trabajan con más de 20 pastores indígenas y su ministerio se enfoca en equipar y entrenarlos para que luego puedan llevar la palabra a sus comunidades.
Fue una bendición que nuestro equipo pasó las primeras 6 semanas de nuestro viaje en un pueblo que está ubicado estratégicamente con tantas comunidades indígenas alrededor. Fue todo un reto pero Dios nos dió muchas oportunidades para servir y mostrar su amor. Normalmente yo traducía para nuestro equipo del inglés al español y luego teníamos una maravillosa traductora llamada Rosa que traducía del español a poqomchí. Estas comunidades tienen una mezcla entre la religión católica y los rituales mayas. Gracias a Dios tienen acceso al nuevo testamento en su idioma (puedes buscarlo en la app de YouVersion escribiendo POHNT en los idiomas). ¡Esto facilitó compartir con ellos el mensaje de esperanza, verdad y vida que hay en Jesús!
Estas son algunas de las cosas que pudimos hacer durante nuestro tiempo en Chicamán y cómo puedes unirte en oración:
CONFERENCIA DE PASTORES Y ESTUDIO BÍBLICO
Nuestros primeros días en Chicamán estuvimos apoyando en la organización de una conferencia para los pastores y sus esposas. Fueron varios días donde se habló acerca de la importancia de tener una relación íntima y personal con Dios, y cómo esto afecta todas las demás áreas de nuestra vida. La última noche pudimos servirles planificando una cena romántica. Esto fue un tiempo muy especial para ellos y estaban muy agradecidos ¡algunos nunca habían tenido una cena especial con sus parejas! Nuestro equipo estuvo apoyando sirviendo las comidas y cuidando a los niños.
Este mismo grupo de pastores se reúne al menos una vez al mes en Chicamán para hacer un estudio bíblico con la organización ASELSI. Por favor acompáñame a seguir orando por ellos. Algunos deben viajar más de 3 horas para poder llegar. Oramos Señor que los guardes y sigas abriendo camino para ellos poder reunirse. Abre sus entendimientos y multiplica el tiempo que tienen juntos para crecer y edificarse. Dios úsalos con gran poder para impactar sus comunidades y traer tu Reino a los Poqomchí. Oramos por otras comunidades de esta región que aún no te conocen como Señor y Salvador, específicamente La Lima, Pajuil, Pinal Pajuil, Modelo Aguacate, Modelo Abajo y Belejú. Esta última es una de las más grandes con más de 10.000 personas y sólo 2 iglesias donde se comparte el evangelio.
LA CAMPANA
Tuvimos el privilegio de organizar un evento de Beauty for Ashes para 28 mujeres de esta comunidad. Estas mujeres forman parte de un ministerio llamado Tapestry International que les enseña diferentes habilidades para trabajar y ayudar a sostener a sus familias. Pudimos compartir con las mujeres un poco de nuestro testimonio, y luego hablar acerca de Mateo 16 cuando Jesús pregunta: ¿quién dicen ustedes que soy? Y Pedro le responde: ¡Tú eres el Cristo! ¡El Hijo del Dios viviente! Hicimos una actividad donde ellas pudieron expresar quién es Jesús para ellas y luego compartir con el grupo.
Esta bella comunidad está en la montaña (el pueblo más cercano está a 2 horas). Seguimos orando por ellos. Dios provee los recursos que necesitan para sobrevivir ¡especialmente el agua! ahorita es época de sequía y si no llueve deben caminar al menos 3 horas para recoger agua del río. Señor guarda su salud. Oramos que puedan tener una nueva y más profunda revelación de quién eres Jesús y que las semillas plantadas en estas mujeres hayan caído en buena tierra y den fruto al 30, 60 y 100 por uno. Confiamos que tú eres el que dará el crecimiento.
